‘You can’t fake this level of soul!’ - Declan Byrne, Triple J

Laura Ingram likes to wear a few different hats. The Melbourne-based musician was mentored by Australia’s “high priestess of soul” Kylie Auldist and tutored by ARIA-winning jazz trumpeter Vince Jones.

This shone through on Ingram’s debut singles, “Valentine’s Day” and “Home For Christmas,” which joined the dots between the smoky soul of Amy Winehouse and the Muscle Shoals revivalism of The Teskey Brothers and Leon Bridges.

Praising “Valentine’s Day,” triple j’s Declan Byrne said, “You can't fake this level of soul.” Beat magazine was similarly charmed by “Home For Christmas,” complimenting its blend of “romance and nostalgia.”

But these songs represent just one side of Ingram’s multifaceted artistic identity. “Not Another Fool,” Ingram’s latest single, is a rock song, pure and simple. The gritty, guitar-driven track takes cues from the uptempo, anthemic rock music of Dire Straits, Heart and Fleetwood Mac.

Whatever the context, Ingram’s voice is the kernel of appeal. On “Not Another Fool,” she cruises through octaves without a hint of strain while her lyrics stamp out the hopes of a no-good ex.

Anyone who’s seen Ingram live will already know how versatile she is. In recent years, she’s supported the likes of Clare Bowditch and Caiti Baker, appeared in the ensemble show Women of Soul alongside thndo, Allysha Joy and Kylie Auldist, and staged a series of sold-out shows celebrating the music of Dolly Parton.

Her live set lists feature a mix of soul, jazz, rock and Americana, and we can expect the scales to tip in a rockier direction on future releases.

“I still love making soul and jazz music,” Ingram says, “but I’m really excited to stretch out and play more 80s-inspired power ballads.”.

Receiving renewed airplay on Double J, Triple J, RRR 102.7FM, PBS 106.7FM and ABC Local, is a Triple J unearthed feature artist and has featured in Beat Mag, Forte and The Music, Laura’s powerful debut singles are an electrifying preview of whats to come from her forthcoming album.
